Blogroll updated

For those who really need to know, I've switched my blogroll back to something slightly less elegant than what is provided by Bloglines, since I have switched to NewsGator for my aggregation.

I picked up MT-Outliner that reads an OPML file, and exported my OPML file from NewsGator. What I don't like is that NewsGator export doesn't see the folders I am using within Outlook, so the OPML file is just a flat list of all the blogs, which isn't very elegant. I'd like to display this list grouped by blogs to which I have added my own meta-data.

I will also have to remember to copy the OPML file every few weeks, as my aggregation changes regularly. Yes, I know that NewsGator offers an online service, but I am not planning to pay for that just to have my blogroll up to date.

Though I see you switched to NewsGator, you could perhaps still use Bloglines for organization. MT-Outliner will pull your data from your Bloglines account (public subs only) by using the bloglines attribute on the container instead of one that points to your OPML file.

Then you would only need to update your Bloglines account with your feed changes and you'd be set. Still work, but perhaps less than that involved in extracting your OPML file and putting on the web someplace.

On a slightly related note, did you leave Bloglines entirely? Any particular reason drive you away? I only ask because I find Bloglines terribly useful. Can't even imagine having an aggregator on a single PC any more!

I primarily left Bloglines with my move to a laptop, which I will be taking pretty much everywhere I go. I also like the fact that I can do all my reading within the same application (Outlook). If I ever end up in a situation where I have another computer at which I work regularly, then I suspect Bloglines might come back into the picture. At this point, I find it foolish to try to manage more than one set of subscriptions.

I had been using Bloglines' plugin to manage my blogroll (rather than MT-Outliner), as that worked just fine. I realize now that wasn't giving me the cross-references that I get from having the links hard-coded. If I switch back to Bloglines, I would probably use MT-Outliner instead. Bloglines creates the blogroll on the fly when the page is viewed, rather than creating the blogroll when the page is created as happens with MT-Outliner.
