Kaliya's Musings: Personal Relationships are key to Knowledge Work

One of the myths of knowledge management that Susan E. Jackson and Niclas L. Erhardt debunk in Leading Organizational Learning: Harnessing the Power of Knowledge is that electronic communications is just as effective as meeting face to face. The authors counter that "personal relationships and face-to-face relationships are more essential than ever" in a knowledge-based economy. I know this to be true in my work. The first time I hear about new trends, emerging initiatives, upcoming conferences is through my human contacts that form my network.
