Power in Economic Networks

Eunaturalgas_krebsValdis Krebs has another news-related network analysis in Power in Economic Networks.  This time, covering the European natural gas network, which is dominated by Russia.

The golden rule of networks is the same as the golden rule of Real Estate -- location, location, location. Find a good location, and you may have some power over the network. End up in a bad location in the network and you may get very cold while you helplessly watch others maneuver.

I know Valdis doesn't always have a lot of time to do these, but it's always nice to see them pop up on his blog or other locations.  Thanks, Valdis!

Thanks for pointing this out, Jack. Valdis does great work.

If you're interested in following social networking, Krebs and many others who work in the field are participant in a rather technical mailing list on the subject which is open to anyone to subscribe to. I've been a member for years, though I generally just learn from reading the conversations and don't have much to contribute directly.

The SOCNET discussion list can be subscribed to from their website. If you're interested, go to www.insna.org and click on the Publications & Forums tab. SOCNET is the last item on the drop-down list.

Much of the talk there is about the nuts and bolts of social network analysis; however, there are also more general discussions about aspects of the field that I as a sociologist have found most interesting and thought-provoking.

And you remind me: I need to go subscribe to Valdis' feed. Thanks!
